Sorrel Ahlfeld recently completed a 30-minute film, and has directed numerous music videos, short form promos, and motion graphics. Since he believes that imposed restrictions can foster creative agility, he found the Ten Second Films competition a welcome challenge in boiling a work down to its elemental beats. He lives in New York City.
Second Prize: Rollerskates! by Mary Hawkins
Judges' Comments
Jake Abraham: A great New York City story, and a very creative concept. We've all admired that building's beautiful sloping facade. Think you'd fly all the way over 42nd St into Bryant Park?
Melanie Crean: A delightful and whimsical fantasy.
Mary Hawkins is an animator and designer in New York City. The Ten Second Films competition excited her as a showcase for the kind of fast-paced narratives she's interested in. Hawkins has a Master's degree in Digital Imaging and Design from New York University. She used Maya® and flint® to make "Rollerskates!"
Third Prize: The 7th Distraction by Daniel Watts
Judges' Comments
David Wild: Sometimes what you don't see is the ten second film. We see distractions one through six, but... I keep hitting the play button.
Melanie Crean: Slickly made, with quick cuts, it has the editorial discipline of a well-timed commercial and conveys a good deal of information in a short time.
Daniel Watts is a partner in truefalsefilms, a digital video production company in San Francisco. He first shot film as an operative for a private investigation firm working from moving cars, vans, motorcycles and aircraft and later spent two years in film school at San Francisco State. "The 7th distraction" is his attempt to prove that any good thirty-second commercial spot must have, at its core, a ten second film.
